Primary School (Age 5-11)

Primary School begins the year your child turns 5, when they enter reception year, and ends at age 11 when your child reaches year 6. There are 3 different school stages within primary education:

  • Early Years  – Reception

  • Key Stage 1 – Years 1 and 2

  • Key Stage 2 – Years 3-6

All Early Years providers are expected to follow the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework from 0-5 years which includes reception year.  Many will also use Development Matters to help them to meet the needs of the early years framework.

All state schools must follow the National Curriculum in England. Each school will have it’s own approach to curriculum delivery and you will find information on this by contacting them.

There is a full list of all the schools providing primary education in Bedford Borough on the council website and information on when and how to apply for a school place.

Parentkind have all the information you need to help you understand the primary school system from what to expect and how to be involved to understanding the curriculum, assessment and tests that your child will experience.
